Work is starting on Britain’s first skyscraper lab, in the space between
Poplar DLR station and the EL Canary Wharf station. It should provide a
pleasant walking route between the stations, and between the Canary Wharf
towers and Poplar station, with its direct services to LCY.

Nice idea but I assume they've already got potential clients otherwise that
would be one hell of a gamble. Also presumably there will be limits on what
can be done there - you wouldn't want highly dangerous pathogens or explosive
chemicals in a 23 storey building near a main financial centre.

There's a huge shortage of lab space, so they'll have no trouble filling it. The problem is with the banking space, of
which there's now too much. And the banks, like HSBC, that now need smaller spaces, are tending to move back to the
City. So the Wharf has to find new uses for the current banking buildings, and have some interesting ideas to turn them
into new-style mixed-use buildings.

Yes, of course.

Not sure thats a good idea. Sustainable buildings are just greenwash and
fashions come and go. Lots of offices have side or roof gardens with sorry
looking plants on them that no one is allowed out on anyway except on special
occasions. Doubt it makes them more rentable. Also structurally that looks
iffy to me as the building wasn't designed to have multiple floor supports
removed but I guess they know what they're doing.

They'll keep the structural supports, but these large floor plate trading floor offices have curtain walls.
