Can I buy a return from and back to the last station on the Freedom Pass limit and start journey from an earlier stop provided the train stops at that station?

Thanks

Yes, you can, and the train doesn't need to stop at the boundary zone
station. But most ticket machines and ticketing sites fail to offer the
option. However, c2c is an honourable exception, and the journey doesn't
need to be on its trains. Manned ticket offices should also offer them.

C2C has another innovation - their ITSO card has your photo on it, so
not only is it possible to store a season ticket, it doubles as the
photo-ID required for seasons.

Thanks - the site is rather clunky but I managed to register and buy a boundary journey. It didn't work without registration for me.

But I couldn't get it to issue the tickets online and had to pick them up from a machine at Waterloo, which was OK but seems a bit odd.

You ought to be able to pick up tickets at any station. They only ask
which one in case it doesn't have a TVM (which is probably none in the
Southeast) and they need to direct you to a different one.

Just to be clear - I can only pick up physical tickets and can't buy online printable or phone code tickets?

Yes, only physical tickets, but I was trying to shed some light on
*where*.
